Introduction to Load Balancing

SAP Load Balancing allows the management of SAP basis to create various groups of logon. Logon groups are referred to as the user’s logical groups that are assigned to one or more instances of SAP.

What is a Load Balancer?

It is a device that distributes the traffic of network or application across the group of services. The load balancer accepts the incoming network & application traffic by sitting between the client and the server.

Features of Load Balancer

· load balancer distributes the incoming traffic to networks by efficiently distributing across the multiple servers.

· The reliability & high availability are maintained by redirecting the requests to those servers that are available in the network.

· In the case of unavailable or offline servers load balancing will automatically remove it from its set up and thus request will not be redirected to the servers.

· Load balancer easily adds & removes the servers in the network as per the demand.

Algorithms of Load Balancing

Here are some of the load balancing algorithms which are used to redirect the request to different servers. The three most common load balancing algorithms that are used by most of the companies are;

· ROUND RIBBON

- This is the first type of load balancing algorithm that redirects the request to different services around the ribbon manner.

- For instance, there are three servers in the network so the first request will go to the first server, the second request will go to the second server & the same with the third request and this process continues just like this.

- In this algorithm, every new server gets a new request so once the server is hit for the first time and the next request will be redirected to the server.

· LEAST CONNECTION

- Least connection is the second algorithm of load balancing where the request is sent to the server that has received the least request or processes the slightest number of resources.

- In order to do some additional computing, it is mandatory for the load balancer to know which server or process has the least number of resources which may take time.

· IP HASH

-IP Hash is the last algorithm of load balancing that requires the client’s IP address in order to redirect the server to that particular network only. This is the type of strategy that gives preference to specific networks or services only.
